Bowling and beards still going strong

It's a hirsute pursuit, and things could get hairy.

Len Barber is counting on it.

The chairman of the Stratford Beard Growers is hoping to keep the tradition growing when the group meets for its 50th anniversary gathering next Saturday at the Rotary Complex.

The highlight, as always, will be the final judging of the beard growing contest.

"It's just a fun winter social," said Barber, who, despite the name, will not be responsible for any trimming at the event. "That's what it's always been."

The club itself has its roots in the 1962 winter carnival in Stratford, when Mike Gornyiczki, the original owner of Mike's Lanes, suggested a beard-growing bowling tournament.

"So they grew beards and bowled nine games," said Barber. "It was just something different to do."

The Stratford Beard Growers was born.

Things grew quickly, and the group's activities expanded to include dances and other social functions, as well as donations to local charities -traditions which continue today.

Can I change the batteries of a Norelco rechargable beard trimmer?

My Norelco beard trimmer, model T6000, no longer works. The battery looks like AA but its covered in red rubber, and looks soldered onto the unit with flimsy metal ends. Should I just throw this thing out, or can it be fixed?
