New Mexico gov denied haircut, swamped with offers
New Mexico Gov. Susanna Martinez, denied a haircut by Antonio Darden as a result of her stance on gay marriage has many suitors for her business.
Stylist Antonio Darden of Santa Fe, New Mexico had been serving Gov. Susanna Martinez for a short while, but the last time the governor's office called to schedule an appointment, Darden just said no.
Martinez's aide called again to see if Darden had changed his mind and was told nothing was different. Darden, an openly gay man who has a partner of some 15 years said that he'd had enough.
The Santa Fe website SantaFeMexican.com reported on Darden's comments about the decision. "If I'm not good enough to be married, I'm not going to cut her hair," he said.
Darden sparked a national discussion on Wednesday when his story got picked up around the country. He told the local news from Channel 4: "I think it's just equality, dignity for everyone. I think everybody should be allowed the right to be together. My partner and I have been together for 15 years."
