'Dr. Black, Mr. Hyde' on DVD: Pride and Shriek
Distributed by exploitation house Dimension Pictures in 1976, at the twilight of the blaxploitation era, "Dr. Black, Mr. Hyde" stars Bernie Casey as Dr. Henry Pride (the name suggests "black pride"), a prize-winning, well-to-do medical researcher who volunteers at the "Watts Free Clinic & Thrift Store," where the examination rooms contain "Superfly" posters and topless prostitutes. (The medical context enables director William Crain -- who four years earlier had delivered "Blacula" -- to justify the inclusion of semi-nude women in not just non-sex scenes but scenes of valuable expository dialogue.)Some viewers may not approve of the movie's depiction of what might be called happy hookers. "I'm running short on bread and I'm horny, too," complains one prostitute, eager for work. "I like what I'm doing," lady-of-the-night Linda (Marie O'Henry) tells Dr. Pride. "That's just a cop-out," says the doctor. "You're the cop-out," responds the angry but smitten Linda. "The only time you're ever around black people is when you're down here clearing your conscience. You know, that white coat really suits you, 'cause you don't know nothin' about the ghetto. I mean, you dress white, you think white, you probably even drive a white car. And you know, if I was white, I just might have a chance."
