Don Ferguson: A barber journeys from cutting to styling
When hairstyling for men first became popular in the mid-1960s, many liked it, but some found it difficult to make the change from a standard haircut.
The styling of men's hair gave birth to unisex hair salons - shops that served both men and women. The adjective "unisex" first appeared in 1968, according to "20th Century Words."
Before the unisex shop, men went to a barbershop and women went to a beauty parlor.
One of the first barbers here to start styling men's hair was Cecil Groce, who's still at it.
In 1963, at age 22, he got a job at the former Marble Front Barbershop, in the 200 block of Clinch Avenue, in the side of the Tennessee Theatre building. It was a popular shop that had a lot of downtown business and professional men as customers. There were four other barbers there, all considerably older than Groce.
"When hairstyling for men started coming in, a lot of the older barbers didn't accept the idea very well," he said. It was a different technique.
