American Fork man finds success in apps
When Rory Boyer's unemployment benefits ran out in February 2010, the month his baby daughter was born, he took $1,000 from his tax return and made the most curious purchase: an iPhone app.
Applications for the iPhone, the uber-popular device from Apple that has completely upended both the cellphone and computing industries, are selling faster than hamburgers at McDonald's. From addictive games to news feeds, navigation tools or even electronic books, these small, inexpensive programs have surpassed 15 billion downloads in just three years, according to technology news website ZDNet, nine times more than McDonald's is selling hamburgers.
Boyer, a 32-year-old man from American Fork, said he bought the iPhone within a month of its release in 2007. But when he became a recession statistic two years later and was unable to find a new job to support his growing family, he sallied forth into the burgeoning field of app development. He used his savings to buy a used computer and learned how to program for the iPhone.
