Luciano: Ready for a change
NEPONSET -- Prices for everything were a lot lower in 1961.
A gallon of gasoline cost 31 cents. A first-class postage stamp ran 4 cents. A Hershey bar went for nickel. And a haircut at Mike's Barber Shop here set you back $1.75.
Inflation, of course, skyrocketed all of those prices - except at Mike's. A half-century later, it's still just $1.75 for a trim here. But not for long.
Today and Saturday bring the last chances to get a snip or buzz - along with the latest local chit-chat - at Mike's Barber Shop. Mike Mowbray, 72, is hanging up his scissors, razor and talc brush.
"I'm getting older," he says with his constant smile, then glances at the ancient, handwritten "HAIRCUTS $1.75" wall sign. "And, I gotta spend all the money I made."
