Event offers services to help homeless
Henson said he had hoped to receive an eye exam Friday morning, but all the appointments were filled by the time he arrived at 8:30 a.m. at the community center. Instead, he settled for a free checkup for his puppy, Bullet, and tabby kitten, Sneezy. Henson said he and his wife recently returned from Texas where they had worked in agriculture and picked up the pets as rescues.I went from $50,000 a year to zip, he said. Its been tough. Ive had a hard time finding a job. But this is home, so we came back.
The free animal care was provided by a CSU program called Pets Forever. The program normally pairs Colorado State University veterinary students and student social workers with elderly and disabled area residents who need help keeping their pets.
The animal checkups were one of several new services offered at the fair this year, as were the eye exams and expanded dental offerings, said Bryce Hach, executive director of the anti-homelessness initiative Homeward 2020. Hach helped organize the inaugural fair last year with assistance from dozens of CSU student volunteers.
