The legend of 3-minute Mike
NEPONSET — The cost of goods and services have gone up quite a bit during the last 50 years.
For instance, in 1961, the average cost of a new house was $12,500; the cost of a gallon of regular gas was 27 cents; a pound of bacon was 67 cents; and a haircut at Mike’s Barber Shop in Neponset was $1.75.
According to The People History consumer report, today’s average cost to buy a new home is $202,100; a gallon of gas is $3.89; and a pound of bacon is $3.98. About the only thing that hasn’t changed in the last 50 years is the cost of a haircut at Mike’s Barber Shop. It’s still $1.75.
Unfortunately for his customers, Mike Mowbray is closing his shop today, Saturday.
On Thursday, the chairs in his one-room, wood-paneled shop were filled with men waiting their turn to get their last haircut from Mowbray. The talk around the room was about the weather and politics and family and Mowbray’s retirement ... and how Neponset would get along without him.
