Weber State University: Xanadu
It’s easy to damn a college production with the faint praise of saying it was “great, for a college production.” Weber State University’s Xanadu offers something entirely delightfully different—something that would still be great if this were a professional production.
Douglas Carter Beane’s self-aware adaptation of the legendarily cheesy 1980 Olivia Newton-John musical finds the muse Clio (Breanne Welch, pictured left) “disguising” herself in skates, leg warmers, an Australian accent and the nom du mortal Kira for her attempt to inspire down-on-his-luck California artist Sonny (Sean Bishop, pictured right) to open a roller disco. Meanwhile, her jealous sisters, Melpomene (Rachel Shull) and Calliope (Shelby Andersen) plot to have her commit the unforgivable crime of falling in love with a human.
Mocking a piece of pop-culture kitsch doesn’t take much subtle skill, but there’s wonderfully affectionate charm in the play itself, both for the era and the songs by ELO and John Farrar. And this staging—in a space that brings the choreography right into the three-sided seating structure—by director Jim Christian is energetic and full of impressively realized production values.
