Monte Poole: These San Francisco 49ers are forging their own identity
They light up the scoreboard on offense, light up the quarterback on defense.
They star in TV highlight shows most every week, reach the playoffs most every year.
They swagger and strut. They stare and dare. They think wide and throw long and make lasting impressions.
Our NFL contenders historically come with specific images -- easy identifiers -- which largely explains the lingering skepticism regarding the 2011 49ers.
We know a contender when we see one, because we've seen many, from the Raiders of the 1970s and '80s, menaces on both sides of the football, to the 49ers of the 1980s and '90s, all imaginative art and craft.
One practically roared in riding Harleys and swinging chains, the other cruised in on an aerodynamic bus with wings. Both were impossible to underestimate.
Because these 49ers are relatively wrapped in plain brown paper, we're still trying to figure them out. We're examining them, looking for flaws, listening for wheezing, sniffing for the stink that surely must lie beneath the deodorant of their 8-1 record.
