£3k reward to help snare cyclist thug
A REWARD of up to £3,000 is being offered to anyone who can help snare the thug who left a man blinded in one eye.
The victim, 24, had left Bar Vic in Victoria Avenue, Southend, on New Year’s Day with his girlfriend, 25, following an evening of celebrations.
As they walked along West Road, Westcliff , a man overtook them on a bike at about 2.50am.
He stopped, got off the bike and threw it down before punching his victim to the ground.
He then kicked him in the face, and bent down to punch him several times. The blows caused a retina to detach, leaving him blind in his right eye. The thug then cycled off.
The victim, a builder from Leigh , has endured two operations and now suffers terrible headaches.
Charity Crimestoppers has decided to offer a cash incentive.
Ann Scott, eastern regional manager, said: “This sort of violent crime in Southend is extremely rare, making this incident all the more shocking.
