Dr. Robert Leonard Questions New Study Linking Stress to Hair Loss

New England’s Foremost Authority on Hair Restoration Says Genetics,

Not Stress, Leads to Hair Loss

CRANSTON, Rhode Island (October 11, 2011) – Dr. Robert Leonard, chief surgeon and founder of Leonard Hair Transplant Associates, is questioning the results of a new study which found stress can cause hair loss in women. Leonard says the study, which is of only about 200 people, is better described as an observational study rather than a true medical, double-blinded study, and while it is interesting, it is not at all conclusive.

According to the study, extreme stress created by divorce or death of a spouse increased the likelihood that a woman will suffer from hair loss. The study also states that excessive sleeping patterns, having multiple children, smoking and the stresses of getting married also contribute to hair loss. The study goes on to say it found women who protected their head from excessive sunlight by wearing a hat faced a lower overall risk of hair loss.

Stress And Hair Loss

Men and women experience baldness or thinning hair in very different ways. Men tend to lose hair in certain areas of the scalp and in many cases men have “male pattern balding” overhead, while hair is still growing on the sides and back of the head. Women tend to lose hair more evenly across the scalp that causes thinning aspect.

Male pattern baldness is the most easy to explain, is hereditary and a natural part of aging. If your father or grandfather is bald, then there is probably not much you can do to prevent baldness. Some women experience hair loss after childbirth and sometimes use some pills to birth control. Most people loose their hair with chemotherapy treatments. The causes of baldness or hair loss may include diet, drug abuse, hormonal imbalances (usually women), illness, poor hygiene practices, and tension.

Stress can also be a factor that is often connected with hair loss. Stress can contribute to hair loss. It is rarely the main cause but rank near the top of the few known causes. The stress related hair loss usually occurs after a stressful period is excessive and the original strain can not be easy to connect to a loss occurrence hair.
