Whether through premature balding, cancer treatment or menopause, losing hair can be a traumatic experience for a woman.

Two local business owners, however, want to turn a painful experience into a powerful, life-changing moment for area women who fear losing their confidence or simply want a change in their lives.

"Women come to us with all types of hair loss due to alopecia, lupus, chemotherapy and probably the most prevalent being age–related," says Judy McBroom, co–owner of Simply Wigs LLC. "We also have a very large clientele of women just wanting a change of style."

The Merrillville business offers more than 125 styles of wigs and offers consultations for women so McBroom and co–owner Wendy Kuhn can help better meet their needs.

"Putting a wig on someone going through chemotherapy or who has premature and age–related hair loss is life changing," McBroom says. "It is the most emotional and rewarding experience in Wendy's and my life."

Is hair loss a symptom of menopause?

I turned 49 in August. I've had noticeable hair loss for at least the last 6 months. Wondering if this is a symptom of menopause or if I need to consult my doctor about this.
