Hope Latimore volunteers with the American Cancer Society
Latimore also was able to use her experience as a licensed cosmetologist to run the “Look Good, Feel Better” program for the society, which teaches beauty techniques to cancer patients to help them manage the appearance-related side effects of cancer treatment. Latimore also volunteers by helping with health care seminars, participating in Relay for Life events and assembling patient information packages at the organization’s main office.
Why this place?
“I am a licensed cosmetologist by training, and it has always been my heart’s desire to use my training to help others. Previously, I worked with hair loss clients because of alopecia, severe burns and hair replacement. One day, a close family friend who knew that I customized wigs contacted me. She was undergoing chemotherapy and was losing her hair. I knew in that instant that my ‘gift’ would be best put to use for cancer patients. Thus, I began researching the American Cancer Society. I attended seminars and read everything I could about the society and its vision. I enrolled in a mastectomy training program. In order to complete my certification for the training, I had to complete 500 hours at a cancer treatment facility. The timing was perfect. I called the American Cancer Society to inquire about volunteering. Having also read about their ‘Look Good, Feel Better’ program, I inquired about it. I was told that the program was not active because they did not have a licensed cosmetologist to run the program. I volunteered to run the program and received the required training. Now, I conduct classes at hospitals and oncology offices throughout the region on a monthly basis.”
