FDA Has Few Solutions For Drug Shortage Crisis
New York, NY -- The FDA said in a new report there is a shortage of nearly 200 medications. That number tripled from just five years ago and includes 17 chemotherapy drugs.
Nikki Abbondondelo was diagnosed with ovarian cancer three years ago. The 51-year-old battled cancer through surgery, as well as multiple chemotherapy drugs, which caused hair loss, severe pain and exhaustion.
"You just do everything possible to help secure your life," said Abbondondelo.
Then, last year, despite all of her efforts, the cancer came back, stronger than ever-- stage 4 with no cure.
But Abbondondelo's medical oncologist, Dr. Birjis Akhund, was not out of options. There was another chemotherapy drug he wanted her to try, called Doxil.
"Doxil is definitely a lifesaver for her. She's responding to it brilliantly, tolerating it very well. She's back to near normal function," said Akhund.
