The doctors said it will take between nine to 18 months before Mangino regains motor and sensory function in his hands with the help of physical therapists. Eventually, they said, he will be able to grasp and pick up objects, but he probably won't feel full sensation for quite awhile.

They would not say for sure whether Mangino will ever play the guitar again, but "we never say never," said Talbot.

Over the past week, Mangino said his primary accomplishment was just accepting his new hands after not having any for 10 years. He said it's been quite an adjustment not seeing his prosthetic hands at the ends of his arms.

"One day I woke up and it was like, 'Yes, that was the right thing to do.' We fought so hard to get this done ... but there's always a question in your mind whether we're doing the right thing, but that question was answered," he said.
