New treatment for baldness?
Researchers have discovered stem cells responsible for triggering hair growth, possibly providing new methods for treatment of baldness.
The researchers from Yale discovered the stem cells in their study focusing on the growth of hair in mice. The cells were located in the fatty layer within the skin and appeared to be necessary in signalling hair growth. Response from the authors of the study was positive in terms of potential treatments for human balding.
If we can get these fat cells in the skin to talk to the dormant stem cells at the base of hair follicles, we might be able to get hair to grow again, said Valerie Horsley, senior author and professor of molecular, cellular and developmental biology.
Specifically the stem cells involved in the creation of new fat cells, adipose precursor cells, which is what was required for the hair regeneration they saw in mice. Men suffering from male pattern baldness could benefit from this as their hair follicles roots lose the ability to restart hair regeneration as the fat layer shrinks around the follicles. By avoiding this, through a process called adipogenesis which is where the fat layer expands, and using the stem cell to induce this hair may be regenerated like the researchers found in mice.
