A tradition of hair care stays in the family
Harold Pritchard is much more than a barber-stylist at Scruples Hair in Hickory. He's a globetrotting instructor who teaches hairstylists the newest cuts while encouraging them to view hair as a canvas and themselves as artists.
Nearly 100 years ago, Pritchard's grandfather, the late Jennings Pritchard of Alexander County, looked upon the canvases of hundreds of farming families and neighbors, cutting hair and shaving faces in his 15-by-18-foot clapboard barber shop in the countryside around Hiddenite.
A while back, Pritchard's uncle, 91-year-old James Pritchard, sat in that old barber shop, twisting in the same 1901 swivel chair once owned by Jennings and chatting with Harold, who was cutting James' hair.
James announced right then and there that he wanted Harold to have the building, which still sits on Pritchard family land.
Harold accepted and with his wife, Evelyn, also a hairstylist, set to work refurbishing the shop. Harold's brothers, Jerry and Conrad Pritchard, helped him move the building 100 yards to a better location, on Hemlock Lane off Old Mountain Road in Hiddenite. They added a porch and put on a new roof.
