Connect your iPod, radio to combat solar panels
New accessory packs that allow Marines to plug computers, radios and even iPods directly into solar panels are heading to Afghanistan.
Development of the adapter packs was prompted by Marines who were finding their own equipment to power devices directly. In at least one case, solar panels were being used to operate a pair of hair clippers to keep Marines looking sharp downrange, said Michael Gallagher, the program manager for Expeditionary Power Systems at Marine Corps Systems Command in Quantico, Va. Now, instead of having to track down or buy adapters on their own, Marines will have a universal kit to meet their needs.
Direct connections to power sources such as solar panels also are more efficient than batteries, said 1st Lt. Jamie Larson, an MCSC spokeswoman.
“Any time you put energy into, or take energy out of, a battery system, some of it is lost in heat,” Larson said. That means not all the energy generated is transmitted to the device it is intended to power.
