It's summer's grand finale
-->SOUTH KINGSTOWN — The calendar still reads summer.
But at the tightly knit cottage community of Roy Carpenter’s Beach in Matunuck, Labor Day marks the psychological divide between one season and the next. It’s the day a lot of families pack up their cottages, when friends say goodbye for the season.
(It’s also the day for the traditional water-balloon/shaving-cream war between the east and west sides of the community, which left some kids happily covered from head to toe in white foam.)
At a picnic table between the rows of cottages on the west side, a slightly more melancholy group of grown-ups was having a final breakfast of pancakes and bacon before leaving.
“It’s the last supper — only, in this case, it’s the last breakfast,” said Kathy Hicks of North Kingstown.
