Soldiers and Sailors statue ready for rededication
Anniversary of the day the Randolph members of the Grand Army of the Republic erected the statue to remember those who fought and died in the Civil War.During that war, Randolph sent 300 men into the Union Army, with 60 not returning home, Town Historian Henry Cooke said.
“For the people who dedicated this monument, the Civil War was not a historical event – it was part of their lives,” he said.
During the rededication ceremony, letters written by Randolph soldiers during that time period will be read. Cooke said their words graphically capture the horror, the pathos and every human emotion and reaction of an enlisted young man.
The Ownership and Pride Committee spearheaded the efforts for the restoration, which cost $5,000 for the statue and $16,000 for the cannon bases. The town used Community Preservation Association (CPA) funds and is raising additional money by holding fundraisers and selling bricks for the walkway for $50. Each brick can be engraved with the donor’s name.
