Sweet Revenge: Theater takes on Broadway classic, but first... a shave.
POLSON — Get ready for a haircut you’ll never forget, Mission Valley.
The Port Polson Players will be bringing the Stephen Sondheim musical of “Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street” to the John Dowdall Theatre beginning on Oct. 28. With the original Broadway production in 1979 winning eight Tony Awards, this musical thriller should be a cutting-edge production for the Halloween season.
”It’s a slasher,” Port Polson actor Wendi Arnold, who portrays Mrs. Lovett in the production, said. “That’s not giving anything away.”
The story begins with Sweeney Todd, played by John Mercer, returning to London in 1846 after being exiled for 15 years. He learns from his former landlady Mrs. Lovett that his wife has poisoned herself and then the tale takes a turn toward revenge in a very, very twisted way.
Without giving away too much, let’s just say you might think twice the next time you go into the barber shop or chow down on a pie.
