Tom likes what he sees...now
It happened just once when Tom Regehr was homeless. It was a fleeting moment; a split second in time.
He was living on the street.
Sleeping in alleys.
Not eating for days.
Craving that next drink or hit.
Standing on Spadina Avenue in Toronto, waiting to cut across the busy street, he looked down at his chest.
He could see his beard. He had gone so long without shaving and it was now touching his chest.
He was absolutely lucid. His mind was clear. And he wondered what the hell had happened to his life.
By the time he got to the other side of the street, the thought was gone, snapped quickly closed like the shutter of a camera, and he was back in survival mode.
This was Mr. Regehr's life. And this was his foreseeable future.
Walking the streets, a roll of toilet paper always tucked under one arm in case the diarrhea, that was always worse when he was craving a drink, suddenly came back.
